About 110 vehicles crashed in a massive pileup Sunday on a fog-shrouded central German autobahn, killing two people and injuring at least 73.

Ten of the 20 people who suffered serious injuries were flown by helicopter to nearby hospitals, police said. Another 250 uninjured people were taken by bus to a Red Cross building for assistance.

Authorities said the accident on the A7 between Fulda and Wuerzburg was caused by drivers going too fast in the fog, which had reduced visibility to just 30 feet. After the first vehicles ran into each other about 10:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes--leading to a 50-car pileup in that direction--about 60 cars in the other direction became involved in another crash.

Damage was estimated to be at least $1 million, and police said it would take hours to separate the wrecked vehicles. Traffic was jammed for 25 miles in both directions.
