Bureau Making Pitch for Census Takers

A U. S. Census Bureau official will talk about job opportunities associated with Census 2000 at a special program Thursday morning.
About 16,000 census takers will be hired in Los Angeles County to knock on doors of residents who miss the April 1 deadline. Workers will make $14 an hour for the four- to six-week assignment, although some may extend to eight weeks depending on the amount of follow-up work needed.
Full- and part-time positions are available, and applicants must pass a written general-knowledge test. People with foreign language skills, such as Spanish and several Asian languages, are especially needed, said Anthony Greno, spokesman for the Los Angeles Census Region.
“This is a way they can feel important and useful,” said Phyllis Indianer, activities coordinator for the Valley Storefront, Jewish Family Service, where the meeting will be held.
The free program will begin at 9 a.m. at 12821 Victory Blvd., North Hollywood.
