Hansen Leads Sea Kings Past Newport Harbor

Kevin Hansen scored 26 points as Corona del Mar defeated ninth-ranked Newport Harbor, 54-49, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

The Sea Kings (12-4) held a one-point lead with 25 seconds remaining when Jud Heitbrink made two free throws, then stole the ball on Newport Harbor’s ensuing possession.

Capistrano Valley 58, Edison 48--Capistrano Valley (10-6) made 10 three-pointers, including four each from Matt Sweany (18 points) and Justin Demere (12 points).

No. 5 Villa Park 61, Woodbridge 51--Matt MacGinnis scored 20 points, making four of four from the three-point line for Villa Park (13-2).

Esperanza 73, Sonora 63--Lloyd Walls scored 20 to lead Esperanza (8-8). Robert Abren scored 40 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Sonora.

Magnolia 69, Saddleback 44--Vincent Bryant scored 17 points and Stia Asoau (16 points) made four of five three-pointers for Magnolia (13-2), which has won 13 of its last 14 games.

Santa Ana Valley 56, Calvary Chapel 52--Alex Landa scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half for Valley (8-7).

Sunny Hills 45, Century 40--Eric Hardeman had 17 points and 17 rebounds for Sunny Hills (8-8).

Tarbut V’Torah 56, Saddleback Valley Christian 41--Tanner Bral had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, and David Echbali had 18 points and seven assists to lead Tarbut V’Torah (8-1).

University 77, Irvine 63--University outscored Irvine, 35-20, in the final quarter. Andy Lawrence had 19 points for the Trojans (11-4) and Ryan Zinchefsky added 17. Andrew Bosshart led Irvine (5-11) with 25.

In the Express League:

Heritage Christian 81, Santa Monica New Roads 57--Senior Todd Warner started in his 80th consecutive varsity game for Heritage Christian and scored nine points to bring his career total to 1,000. Warner is the first player in the school’s 65-year history to score 1,000 points in a career.

Heritage Christian (10-4, 1-0) opened up a 48-18 halftime lead, behind 20 points from Ryan Meyer and Matt Winter.
