The Fullerton School District Board of Trustees has hired a private attorney to help negotiate with the city over a proposed $1.3-million loan for the expansion of Maple Elementary School.

The board voted 4 to 1 Tuesday to hire Mark Huebsch because of his knowledge of redevelopment law and contracts prepared by the city’s Redevelopment Agency, which would lend the money to the district, interest-free. With the loan approved, the district can apply for matching state funds to pay for the expansion of Maple School, which offers kindergarten through third-grade classes.

Trustee Kim Guth voted against the motion, saying the district should set a spending limit on legal fees.
