AF Major Refuses Vaccine, Is Charged
A decorated pilot stationed at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del., believed to be the highest-ranking Air Force officer to refuse the anthrax vaccine, was charged with disobeying an order. Maj. Sonnie Bates has said his fears that the vaccine would harm his health grew after he saw other members of his squadron develop unexplained illnesses after starting the series of six shots. “He’s got a family to care for, including a 7-year-old autistic son,” said Capt. William Burke, the Air Force lawyer assigned to defend Bates. Bates could face up to five years in a military prison if convicted.
