Enberg Moves Over to CBS

Dick Enberg, after 25 years at NBC, joined CBS on Wednesday, signing a four-year contract with a salary of about $2 million a year.

Enberg, whose play-by-play work has earned him 11 Emmy Awards and nine sportscaster-of-the-year awards, had expressed a desire to again call NFL games, and the move to CBS had been in the works for some time.

His CBS football partner next season will be Dan Dierdorf. Verne Lundquist, Dierdorf’s partner this season, will move to college football, replacing Sean McDonough, whose contract was not renewed.

In his first CBS assignment, Enberg will be reunited with Billy Packer on Saturday when they announce the Ohio State-St. John’s basketball game at Madison Square Garden. Enberg’s regular partner on college basketball will be Al McGuire. Enberg, Packer and McGuire at one time did college basketball together at NBC.

Enberg also will do the play-by-play on U.S. Open tennis and will be a contributor at the Masters and PGA Championship.

Until NBC lost the AFC package to CBS two years ago, Enberg was NBC’s top pro football announcer, working eight Super Bowls.

“It was that first season of not being a part of it that made me realize NFL football is what I really want to do,” Enberg said.
