Coastal Panel Showed Backbone
* Re “Bolsa Chica Project Slashed Again” (Jan. 14):
Good for the California Coastal Commission for showing some backbone.
Now the state of California [should] use some of its (our) budget surplus to simply buy up coastal wetlands and undeveloped property.
Most of the wetlands in Huntington Beach were destroyed decades ago--my 30-year-old home sits on a filled marsh almost five miles from the ocean.
Our population will continue to explode through the next century, but the coast is a finite ecological and recreational resource our children should inherit.

* I read the latest news about the Bolsa Chica mesa with great excitement and joy.
The California Coastal Commission staff is doing its job in suggesting that the acreage to be developed on the mesa should be severely reduced.
[Developer] Lucy Dunn’s statement that 90% of their original land holdings are now parks, wetland and open space is misleading.
The Bolsa Chica lowlands were purchased by the state for about $27 million. And where are the parks?
The Bolsa Chica Land Trust leaders are to be commended for their tenacity and years of hard work trying to save this wonderful open space to be enjoyed by all.
The mesa is an integral part of the wetlands ecosystem. My hope is that the commissioners will fully understand this.
