Re “How Long Will E-Commerce Be a Sacred Cow?” Jan. 20: I disagree with George Skelton. Those who benefit from Internet tax breaks are not “primarily the affluent who can afford a computer.” The affluent have their own private tax breaks and loopholes that save them thousands or millions a year.

If a regular person can save, say, $80 in taxes when he buys a computer over the Internet, that’s an incentive to buy a computer. That’s a good thing. If he can save a couple of dollars in taxes when he buys smaller items, that’s good, too.

The only good taxes are no taxes. The less government dips its greedy fingers into the pockets of regular people the better.
