** 1/2 WYNONNA, “New Day Dawning,” Curb/Mercury

Share

The most revealing moment on this country-pop dynamo’s fifth solo album (due in stores Tuesday) is the closing track, “I Can’t Wait to Meet You.” It’s a seductively pulsating number about giving in to religious faith that makes great use of her gospel-drenched voice, but, intentionally or not, it also sums up Wynonna’s ongoing struggle with identity since mom Naomi’s illness put the Judds on ice a decade ago: “Can’t seem to get nowhere ‘less you’re next to me.”

“Nowhere” is much too strong a word for Wynonna’s mixed solo outings, but routine moments stemming from indifferent song choices have been frustratingly common, and they’re plentiful again here.

Too often it sounds as if she’s indiscriminately grabbing something from each aisle in the pop music supermarket to showcase her versatility rather than unleash emotion.

Cementing that impression is “Big Bang Boogie,” the delightful four-song Judds reunion mini-album included with the first 250,000 copies of “New Day Dawning.”

With Naomi at her side, Wynonna suddenly sounds completely in her element. Want to hear how magnificent a singer Wynonna can be when she finally gets hold of a first-class song? Check her out singing Jesse Winchester’s drop-dead gorgeous ballad “That’s What Makes You Strong.”

Spine-tingling.
