His Favorite Castle

While most Americans have yet to discover Inveraray, Scotland, writer Patricia Beeson (“Castle Town, Lochside View,” Jan. 16) probably wasn’t aware that this part of Loch Fyne is also the ancestral home of the MacNaughton Clan.

American MacNaughtons frequently travel northeast from Inveraray on the A83 road to view their manse, Dunderave Castle. This small but complete house is privately owned (by a dentist from Ohio) and may not be visited, but as the castle sits on a promontory that juts into the loch, it can be easily viewed from the roadway. While the Duke of Argyll’s castle is larger and more imposing, when a MacNaughton thinks of Loch Fyne, he thinks of Dunderave.
