Crash Near D.C. Zoo Kills Child, Woman; 2 Hurt
A car jumped a curb and careened onto a sidewalk near the National Zoo on Friday, killing a toddler in a stroller and a woman and injuring two other people, authorities said.
The crash occurred on a busy commercial street lined with shops and restaurants two blocks from the zoo.
The driver, Bernard Gregory Antoine, 39, of the District of Columbia, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, said Capt. Michael Jacobs, a police spokesman. Police ruled out alcohol as a factor in the accident, citing instead excessive speed and driver inattention.
District resident Graham Johnston said he heard crushing metal and honking and ran to the scene. He said the driver appeared in shock, asked repeatedly about the toddler and muttered something about losing control of the car.
One-year-old D’Montrall Morris was pronounced dead at the scene, and an unidentified woman with severe leg injuries was pronounced dead at a hospital. The boy’s cousin, Threshon Morris, 18, and a woman identified as Elizabeth McKenzie, 74, were listed in good condition at another hospital.
Police closed Calvert Street, a main commuter artery, throughout the evening rush hour, creating backups for miles.
