Brazil, U.S. Teams Have Little Trouble

Three teams from Brazil posted unbeaten marks Friday during the opening rounds of the 2000 Oldsmobile Chicago Grand Slam tournament, with ninth-seeded Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana pacing the United States’ effort.

Top-seeded Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran led the Brazilians with victories over second-seeded Canyon Ceman and Brian Lewis of the U.S. (17-16) and Luis Maia and Joao Brenha of Portugal (15-9) to advance to a match today against Blanton and Fonoimoana.

Joining Araujo and Benjamin as unbeaten Brazilians are third-seeded Ze’Marco deMelo and Ricardo Santos and fourth-seeded Emanuel Rego Scheffer and Jose Loiola.

Blanton and Fonoimoana scored a 15-3 win over Christian Jodard and Jean Philippe Penigaud of France before defeating eighth-seeded Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson of the U.S.

On the women’s side, five U.S. teams, led by by top-seeded Misty May and Holly McPeak, won their opening matches.

May and McPeak won their only match after a first-round bye. The U.S. teams of 12th-seeded Danalee Bragado and Ali Wood, 15th-seeded Nancy Mason and Marsha Miller, Stephanie Cox and Katy Eldridge and Allison Block and Pat Killiany all won to advance with May and McPeak to today’s matches.
