An Oxnard chiropractor has announced his plans to run for the Ventura County community college board.

Kalani Gusman Jose said he will run for the 5th District trustee seat, representing Oxnard and Port Hueneme. The seat is being vacated by Pete Tafoya, who resigned in May after accepting a fellowship at National Defense University in Washington.

Jose, 34, attended Oxnard College, where he started the Asian-Pacific Student Union and served in student government. He graduated with honors in 1994.

Jose runs a private chiropractic business in Oxnard. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Oxnard, volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club in Port Hueneme and serves as health advisor to the Hueneme High School athletic department.

Jose said that if elected he would focus on building strong relationships between unions and management and on recruiting more Oxnard students to the campus. Jose also wants to promote Oxnard College programs in the community and increase the number of transferable classes offered.

Jose is married and has five children.
