Matthew Okoh’s 12-yard header in the closing seconds of second-half injury time Saturday gave the Colorado Rapids a 1-1 tie with D.C. United in front of 14,882 at Washington.
Okoh leaped to beat a crowd to Anders Limpar’s cross and sent it past goalkeeper Mark Simpson in the third minute of injury time. It was Okoh’s second goal for Colorado (8-9-2) and a sweet one since Okoh did not catch on with United after a tryout with the team before the season.
“I wasn’t that wound up before the game as far as rubbing their faces in it, but no doubt I wanted to have a good game against them,” Okoh said.
United played overtime without second-leading scorer Marco Etcheverry, whom Coach Thomas Rongen replaced with a defender in the 86th minute leading 1-0.
D.C. United (4-11-5) dominated play throughout the game, coming up with numerous scoring chances. United had 10 of the game’s 13 shots on goal.
Columbus 2, San Jose 1--Robert Warzycha scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute and then assisted on a goal by Dante Washington a minute later as the Crew (7-8-4) came back from a 1-0 deficit to stun the Earthquakes (4-8-7) in front of 14,068 at Columbus.
San Jose, which used a goal by Wojtek Krakowiak in the 48th minute to take the lead, had been seeking its first road victory this season and is now 0-8-3 away from Spartan Stadium.
New York-New Jersey 2, Tampa Bay 0--The MetroStars (9-7-2) got goals from Mark Chung and Petter Villegas and took over first place in the Eastern Division with a victory over the Mutiny (10-9-0) in front of 8,220 at Tampa, Fla.
