HUNTINGTON BEACH
The Huntington Beach Pier said goodbye to an old friend Friday. As crowds gathered to witness history, a giant crane removed the old lifeguard Tower Zero, which will be taken to the American Legion Hall in Midway City. The tower has been replaced by a tower that was completed in May.
“[The old tower] is a part of everybody,” said Wally Harvel, a local surfer. “It’s gone and we won’t see it again. It’s kind of sad.”
Westwood resident and former Huntington Beach lifeguard Pete Carolan, the tower’s new owner, said the old tower will be restored and put on display at the American Legion Hall by the end of the year.
