The City Council squared off with members of a proposed ballot initiative that seeks to limit campaign contributions during a council meeting last week.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, members of the Ralph Nader-led Oaks Project criticized the council for challenging a campaign reform measure the citizens group is trying to add to November’s ballot.

The initiative aims to prohibit companies with major city contracts from donating to local political campaigns. If approved, elected officials could not accept contributions from companies that have earned more than $20,000 from the city.

In a June 13 closed meeting, the City Council voted 4 to 1 to challenge the legality of the measure in court before it appears on the ballot.
