Architects to Discuss Plans for Library

Share

Area residents are invited to a meeting Monday to view and discuss preliminary plans for the new Sylmar Library.

The architects, Hodgetts & Fung Design Associates, will be present to answer questions about the 12,500-square-foot facility, which will include special reading areas for children and young adults and a multipurpose meeting room.

An improved “virtual library” area will offer multimedia computer workstations with access to the Internet and a variety of databases. Library parking will also be expanded.

The Sylmar Library project, estimated at $3 million, will be funded by Proposition DD, which passed in 1998. The bond allocated $178.3 million for construction and renovation of 32 branches of the Los Angeles Public Library. Construction of the new Sylmar branch is to start in about a year, according to Juliana Chang, a representative of the library facilities division.

Like many other branches, the Sylmar Library has been deemed too small to adequately serve the growing community, said Rachel Conger, public relations specialist for the Los Angeles Public Library. The current building is nearly 40 years old and about 5,500 square feet, with inadequate seating, shelving and computer space, she said.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at the library, 13059 Glenoaks Blvd.
