Gov. Gray Davis appointed a 20-year-old Northridge resident to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors on Thursday.

Matthew D. Roy, a recent graduate of College of the Canyons in Valencia, was nominated by the California Student Assn. of Community Colleges and selected by Davis to serve a one-year term as the only student on the 16-member board.

The governor also reappointed Pierce College history instructor Patricia G. Siever to her second two-year term.

The Community College Board of Governors forms policy and advises the chancellor. It is also involved in forming legislation affecting California’s community colleges.

Roy said he has “no specific plans to make any changes,” but is concerned that many college teachers are not paid for office hours. He also said he wants the colleges to be more accessible.

Roy plans to study international relations at Cal State Sacramento in the fall and aspires to be a politician. He said he applied for the Board of Governors “because it’s the next step I’d like to take in my political career.” Board members meet regularly throughout the year, but do not receive a salary.
