What: “Topspin”

Where: Channel 2, Sunday, 12:30 p.m.

As the title might suggest, this half-hour show, produced by Wave Entertainment in association with CBS and the United States Tennis Assn. is about tennis players. But it’s not only about tennis players playing tennis. The five-week series focuses on tennis players doing such things as swimming with dolphins, flying with the Blue Angels, taking batting practice with the Baltimore Orioles and bungee jumping.

The idea behind the show is to attract new fans to tennis by showcasing its stars’ off-court personalities leading up to CBS’ coverage of the U.S. Open.

One of the features in the first show has Monica Seles at the CART Grand Prix of Miami. She visits the pits, chats with Michael Andretti and Christian Fittipaldi and drives the pace car 120 mph.

There’s also a look at Davis Cup captain John McEnroe at competitions in Zimbabwe and the Great Western Forum, with much of the footage shot by the players.

Other features include a tour of the Penn tennis ball factory, with Murphy Jensen as the guide, and a profile of Andy Roddick, 18, the No. 1-ranked junior player.

Future shows will feature Anna Kournikova swimming with dolphins off the Australian coast, Jan-Michael Gambill playing with baby tigers, Patrick Rafter bungee jumping in Germany, Mark Philippoussis wakeboarding, Martina Hingis taking part in a modeling session, Alexandra Stevenson auditioning for a Broadway show, and Pete Sampras and Jim Courier playing golf with celebrity friends.
