Firefighters extinguished a blaze that swept through a Ventura home Wednesday morning and caused $200,000 in damages.

No major injuries were reported in the fire that broke out about 6:45 in the kitchen of a two-story home in the 2500 block of Woodpecker Avenue.

By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had taken hold, but residents Jolinda Sampson and her son, David, were safely outside, Ventura Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Rennie said.

Firefighters fought to keep the blaze from extending to neighboring homes, though a fence and window of a house next door were scorched, authorities said.

Firefighter paramedics treated Jolinda Sampson on the scene for an asthma attack.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, but arson is not suspected, authorities said.
