Laguna Beach Keeps Sobriety Checkpoints
The Laguna Beach City Council voted Tuesday night to continue the city’s sobriety checkpoints.
Councilman Paul Freeman had proposed eliminating the program because he believes checkpoints infringe on civil liberties.
“While it’s not Checkpoint Charlie, it’s a checkpoint. And I don’t like the idea,” said Freeman, who voted against the program.
Renee Oaks of Aliso Viejo told the council that her parents were killed by a drunk driver when she was 13.
“If you have to give up five minutes to save one life . . . there’s no comparison,” she said.
The rest of the council disagreed with Freeman, and voted 4-1 to continue with the program.
The city sets up monthly checkpoints using a two-year $90,000 state grant.
