A report issued by the San Clemente Water District indicates the city’s water is well within federal standards for safe drinking water.

The city’s tap water fell below the Environmental Protection Agency’s limits for such common contaminants as coliform bacteria, lead and trihalomethanes, which are a byproduct of chlorine disinfectant in the water.

City water contained 44 parts per million of trihalomethanes, below the federal standard of 100 ppm.

Only one sample of 80 turned up positive for coliform bacteria, three less than the federal level.

None of the 30 tests for lead, which generally comes from corroded house plumbing, turned up a high enough level to warrant a health risk.

The city also exceeded secondary standards monitoring the taste, color and odor of water.
