Eleven disabled adults were slightly injured Friday in Lancaster when the minibus they were riding in was knocked onto its side by a car that ran a red light, authorities said.

The car’s driver, 29-year-old Julie Thom of Las Vegas, and her 8-year-old daughter also suffered minor injuries when their car collided with the bus at Avenue I and 5th Street East, authorities said.

The victims were taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where all were expected to be treated and released, hospital spokesman Paul Allemeier said.

Thom was driving west on Avenue I about 2:30 p.m. when she ran a red light and crashed into the bus, said Lt. Richard Lichten of the sheriff’s Lancaster station. The Laidlaw Transit bus was carrying a group of mentally disabled adults home from a day trip, Lichten said.

“We were very lucky that no one was more seriously hurt,” Capt. Mark Savage of the county Fire Department said.

A day earlier, traffic accidents in Lancaster and nearby Palmdale killed five people and injured eight.
