Candidates may begin filing today to run for the two City Council seats open this year. Mayor Charles Sylvia will not seek reelection this year, wishing to honor the principle of the city’s term limits law, approved by voters in 1996. Sylvia has served seven terms on the council since 1975. Councilman Ron Bates has said he will seek reelection but that this would be his last term. Both Sylvia and Bates are eligible for three more terms. The deadline to file is Aug. 11. Information: (562) 431-3538.
