Downey Financial Corp.

The Newport Beach parent company of Downey Savings and Loan Assn. reported that net income for the second quarter rose 49% to $22.5 million, or 80 cents a share, from $15.1 million, or 53 cents a share, for the same period last year. Total assets increased 44% to $10.5 billion.
