A feather in Canada’s cap: The Toronto Stock Exchange’s 300-share index on Monday closed higher than the Dow Jones industrial average for the first time in almost five years, powered by gains in telecommunications and Internet-related stocks.

The TSE-300 index, which has been streaking this year, rose 65.72 points, or 0.6%, to 10,844.50 while the Dow fell 8.48 points to 10,804.27. The last time the Canadian index had a higher point value was Aug. 24, 1995.
