Mayor Christina L. Shea will make her third trip to the nation’s capital next week to enlist Beltway allies in south Orange County’s fight against an international airport at El Toro.

Irvine officials learned of the trip last week when authorities from the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority, a coalition of eight South County cities that oppose an airport at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, threw together plans at the last minute.

The authority “wanted to go back and talk to the lobbyists and get an update on what’s going on,” Shea said. “It’s a lot of investigating. We go back and find out what the talk of the town is, and it gives us some insight into what’s going on politically.”

The trip will cost between $5,000 and $6,000, city officials said.
