Magnitude 6.2 Quake Kills Two in Pakistan
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 killed two people in Pakistan on Tuesday morning and jolted thousands in neighboring Afghanistan, sending them fleeing from their beds into the streets.
The quake, with an epicenter in the Hindu Kush mountain range north of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, caused windows to rattle and furniture to tremble, witnesses said. In Kabul, people grabbed their children and ran outdoors to wait for the rumbling to subside.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage in Afghanistan. But in Pakistan’s northern city of Peshawar, a 28-year-old man and his 3-year-old son were killed when the roof of their house collapsed, Pakistan’s state-owned news agency reported.
The quake was felt as far away as Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, about 240 miles from the epicenter.
Afghanistan has been hit by a number of severe earthquakes. A powerful quake in 1998 killed more than 5,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless in the country’s north.
