Street Will Honor Clinton, but Not for Long

President Clinton is only going to last five more months in the White House. And Bill Clinton Street is only going to last five more weeks in West Hollywood.

City Council members have voted to temporarily rename a short stretch of Clinton Street that passes through their tiny city “Bill Clinton Street” as a salute to the president.

Councilman Steve Martin said Clinton deserves to be honored because “his efforts on behalf of the lesbian and gay community were unprecedented.”

Other council members balked at permanently renaming the street. But they agreed Monday night to a temporary name change through the end of the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 17.

City officials said they will invite Clinton to attend an unveiling of one of the signs while he is in Los Angeles for the convention. They said they will present him with a replica of a city street sign if he shows up.

The change of street signs will cost the city about $500, officials said. But “the fact that the city of West Hollywood twice overwhelmingly supported Mr. Clinton’s bid for the presidency” makes objections about the cost unlikely, they indicated.
