Royce to Seek Fullerton Post Office Investigation

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Rep. Edward R. Royce (R-Fullerton) will request an investigation of complaints from local postal workers about their working conditions.

Royce will ask the federal Inspector General and the U.S. Postal Service to look into claims that Tim Bomersback, postmaster for the Fullerton office on East Chapman Avenue, allows supervisors to yell at employees, not give them breaks and overwork them, a spokesman for the congressman said Friday.

“He’s not making any judgments either way,” said spokesman Bryan Wilkes in Washington. “But when you have these many allegations, you have to investigate.”

On Thursday, a group of 30 former and current employees met in Fullerton with staff for Royce. The workers called for the resignation of Bomersback, who was appointed to his position in 1989. The group said problems with the Fullerton office have increased under his leadership.

Bomersback could not be reached for comment, but postal service officials said they saw no need for an additional investigation by an outside agency, and that they are reviewing what is going on in the office.

A postal service spokeswoman in Los Angeles said there have been few complaints coming out of the office, which employs about 300 people.

“Grievances filed in the Fullerton Post Office are not particularly high,” said Terry Bouffiou, who declined to specify the number of complaints actually filed.

“Some of these [protesting] employees have not even filed grievances or come to management to say there is a problem,” she said.

Bouffiou said she feels confident the postal service can resolve the problem on its own.

“We have nothing to hide, but we’re open to an investigation,” she said. “Probably there are a few unhappy employees but the vast majority are happy in their jobs.”

Bouffiou said communication on site was probably the real answer.

‘There needs to be dialogue between supervisors and employees,” she said.
