Irvine Unified School District trustees approved $2.3 million for special education programs last week. They also repeated they are distressed over laws that require them to provide expensive classes but offer little funding to offset costs.

At least one trustee wants residents and voters to be more informed about the issue.

“I have no problem spending the money,” Trustee Steven S. Choi said. “But I think the public has to hear about the impact that this special education is causing [on the district’s budget]. The government is putting schools in such a difficult dilemma.”
