The City Council has approved an agreement with the Acjachemen Nation to move the tribe’s offices into the city’s old fire station.

Under the agreement, the tribe, a nonprofit organization also known as the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, will not pay rent but will be responsible for part of the maintenance costs of the building, which is at El Horno and La Matanza streets.

Acjachemen Nation representatives said they are happy the council approved the agreement last week but are disappointed with some of the council members’ comments.

Councilman David M. Swerdlin and Mayor Collene Campbell said they wished the tribe would unite with two smaller groups of Acjachemen members operating under different leaders.

Tribal President Jean Fritz, who leads the Acjachemen group identified in the agreement, said she believed the council members were implying her group is responsible for the split.
