White Activated From Disabled List

Feeling more comfortable with an extra outfielder on the bench than an extra reliever in the bullpen, the Dodgers reinstated center fielder Devon White from the disabled list and optioned pitcher Al Reyes to triple-A Albuquerque before Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

White, 37, had been on the DL since May 5 after partially tearing his left rotator cuff diving for a ball. The seven-time Gold Glove award winner is in the second year of a three-year, $12.4-million contract which pays him $4 million this season and $5 million in 2001.

“I’m all right,” said the switch-hitting White, who is batting .289 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 22 games as a leadoff hitter. “We’ll see what happens now.”

Reyes, who was acquired in a June 13 trade with the Baltimore Orioles for reliever Alan Mills, made one appearance with the Dodgers, pitching a perfect ninth inning in a 5-2 loss to the Giants on Saturday.

While Todd Hundley is eligible to come off the disabled list today, the injured catcher said his broken right thumb is still hurting and he would remain on the DL for the foreseeable future.

“There’s still some tenderness and it’s just real sensitive right now,” said Hundley, whose thumb was broken on a foul tip July 7 in an interleague game at Seattle. “Obviously I want to get back sooner rather than later.”

Hundley also said that the play of backup catchers Chad Kreuter, who was batting .260 with five home runs and 16 runs batted in, and Paul LoDuca, .306, two homers and seven RBIs, has made his injury-marred season somewhat easier to handle.

“It’s easier on my nerves, I guess, that those guys are doing such a good job and the team isn’t really struggling [because of them],” he said. “It’s a day-to-day thing for me now.”

Hundley, who spent most of June on the DL because of a strained rib cage, has played in 46 of the Dodgers’ 97 games and is batting .316 with 17 homers and 43 RBIs.

* Update--The first two games of this four-game set between the National League West rivals are a virtual repeat of last week’s quick-hit two-game series at Dodger Stadium, which the Dodgers swept with Brown beating Arrojo, 9-1, on a one-hitter and Park defeating Yoshii, 6-3. But the mile-high atmosphere of Coors Field could cure what ails the reeling Rockies, who have lost 15 of their last 18 games. Brown is 3-2 with a 4.41 ERA in 34 2/3 innings over five career appearances at Coors Field.
