New Protest Area Proposed for Convention

Attorneys for groups planning protests during the Democratic National Convention in August received an alternate proposal Monday from the city on where those demonstrations could occur.

The city submitted its proposal in response to a federal court opinion last week that ruled as unconstitutional the initial plans for a protest zone across a parking lot from Staples Center.

The city now proposes allowing activists to march to the eastern side of Figueroa Street north of 11th Street, said Dan Tokaji, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

“There are some problems that remain, but it’s a start,” Tokaji said, citing questions of what barriers may block activists from delegates entering Staples Center, among other issues. Lawyers and city officials are slated to meet Wednesday to discuss the plans.

A spokesman for the city attorney’s office declined to comment, citing the pending negotiations.
