Children visiting grandparents at Leisure World this week got a chance to get their faces painted, make crafts, and gaze at a porcupine chomping on fruits and vegetables.

Local resident Evelyn Coombe

enjoyed watching her granddaughter, Katie, 5, color a bookmark at the stamp craft table. Coombe’s grandchildren, who live in Riverside County, visit her about once a month, but they don’t usually have such an array of activities. “My grandchildren are having a wonderful time,” Coombe said.

Katie even had evidence of fun on her face. She had a butterfly painted on her left cheek.

Clubhouse One Supervisor Cynthia Alexander said the annual Grandparents’ Day event started four years ago to give children more to do during visits.

“We have so many grandchildren visiting and there’s no activities for them,” she said.

This year’s theme was “Olympic Games.” The event, held Wednesday in Clubhouse One, featured a water dunk, pie walk, bingo, mock discus, javelin and basketball throws, raffle and a face painter.
