New York Gov. George Pataki abruptly ordered London-style red double-decker tour buses off the streets of New York City on Wednesday, citing the death of a pedestrian in an accident and hundreds of safety violations.

Pataki said in a statement that he was suspending the state vehicle registration of all 63 buses in the fleet run by New York Apple Tours, a familiar sight around New York in recent years packed with tourists from all over the world.

Confused tourists were ordered off the buses, which tour the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn daily. They were told their tickets would be accepted by another tour bus operator, Gray Lines.

New York Apple Tours defended its safety record Wednesday, maintaining the pedestrian’s death did not warrant the suspension.
