Group Assails Lack of Recycling at Dump

A group of Granada Hills residents Thursday protested the lack of recycling facilities at the Sunshine Canyon Landfill, saying the dump operator reneged on a promise to provide the service.

“They agreed to provide a buyback center for recyclables and they just plain haven’t done it,” said Wayde Hunter, president of the North Valley Coalition of Concerned Citizens.

A representative of dump-operator Browning-Ferris Industries said the firm has complied with all conditions imposed by the county.

In winning permission from the county in 1995 to operate a landfill, BFI agreed only to explore opening a buyback center for recyclables on the landfill site, a representative said.

BFI spokesman Arnie Berghoff said the county later signed off on a determination that it was not practical to put a buyback facility on the landfill property because of the truck traffic on the site and the fact that buyback centers are plentiful in the community at supermarkets and other locations.

Opponents of the dump, which the city recently gave permission to expand, said the recycling center was an important proposal aimed at lessening the impact of the landfill on the public.
