Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday unveiled a software program for businesses designed to shield Web servers from attacks that can crash computer systems as well as better safeguard sensitive company information.

Called Internet Security and Acceleration Server, or ISA Server 2000, the new Web software is one of seven new Web-related servers Microsoft is rolling out this year as part of its new Internet services strategy.

“It’s not a magic bullet that will stop every hacker attack, but it’s a great step forward,” said Bob Muglia, Microsoft’s group vice president for business productivity.

The product, available in a beta version, also relies on new software from several independent companies to enhance the server’s security, management and anti-virus features, officials said. Microsoft made the announcement at Tech-Ed 2000, an annual conference for independent developers and informationtechnology officials.

The software acts like a firewall that secures private networks and Web sites. It prevents traffic from entering the organization unless it conforms to specific usage policies. The firewall features integrated intrusion detection and “smart” application filters to further block attacks from hackers or viruses.

Experts cautiously welcomed the software product, saying Web-related security questions top most companies’ list of concerns.
