Gun Laws

Share

* “Corrupt Dealers Expose Weakness in Gun Laws” (June 1) leaves one question unasked. For the past seven years the Clinton-Gore administration has called for more and more gun laws. All the while, the agency that would have been charged with enforcing those new laws, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, has proved to be either unwilling or unable to vigorously enforce our existing laws.

Why has the administration been calling for more gun laws even when it is so unlikely that it would be able to enforce them? Since unenforced gun laws do nothing to enhance public safety, claims about wanting to protect Americans from violence cannot be the reason for wanting these new laws.

Francisco Lopez died defending his family and home against three armed terrorists (“Man Kills Intruder, Is Slain,” June 1). As he fell, Lopez killed one of the attackers. Lopez was a brave man and his family has every right to be extremely proud as they mourn.

“Unidentified authorities,” presumably police, said that something inside Lopez snapped. Throughout our history, brave men have “snapped,” and because of their courage and sacrifice we are alive and free.
