* Re “Firm’s Officials Contradict Quackenbush,” June 6: The more we learn about Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush’s actions, the more it appears he is a man who has an easy time deceiving people for his own benefit. His refusal to cooperate indicates his actions speak much more clearly than his words.

In fairness to our citizens and our judicial system, he needs to be given every opportunity to defend himself in a court of law with a jury of his peers. If found guilty of misappropriation of funds and deceiving the public, he must face the same penalty as any other citizen. Simply dismissing him from his present position is not justice.

Now that we know that Quackenbush entered into sweetheart deals with the insurance companies, letting them off for about 1% of their potential liabilities, shouldn’t we ask about rescinding those deals and going after the insurance companies for what they really owe? It seems to me that some level of collusion took place--enough to void the agreements and work for a fair settlement for the affected homeowners.

Every day for the last 2 1/2 months, I’d open The Times to find the latest hatchet job (err, investigation) of Republican Quackenbush. He has done nothing illegal. It is my understanding that 98% of the earthquake insurance claims were settled and the remaining 2% were not filed in a timely manner. He has also been in the forefront of trying to get Holocaust survivors reparations.

I have met Quackenbush and he is one of the good guys in Sacramento. This is just another ongoing example of the liberals and the willing media out to slander and ruin the reputation of another effective and successful Republican who easily was slated for higher office.
