No Room at the Green

Regarding “Park Place” by Dan Gordon (May 21): I remember back to 1941 or ’42 when the Village Green apartments first opened and I was attracted by their publicity to take a bus from Hollywood down to the models.

I liked the complex at once and would have loved to move in, but I was told very sweetly by a sales rep that they were renting only to Protestants. The reason, I was told, is that they didn’t want any bickering between possible Catholic tenants, and I assume, though he didn’t say so directly, Jewish ones either.

I have been back to the development once or twice since then to visit friends of the previously unwanted persuasions, so I know times and political currents have changed--but I have never forgotten the initial rejection.
