Volkswagen has opened a self-styled car theme park called Autostadt, a cross between Disney World and the Smithsonian Institution that extols the virtues of the company that brought us the Beetle. Autostadt, or Auto City, is a 62-acre complex wedged between train tracks, a dirty canal, Volkswagen AG’s red-brick auto works and the company’s world headquarters in this gloomy factory town. It offers crash-test simulations, a 360-degree cinema, a go-cart track and pavilions that showcase the cars of Volkswagen and subsidiaries Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce.
