Clinton’s Lies

Share

* Your June 11 article (“A Sincere Distrust of Politicians”) recounts sins of prevarication of presidents past: Johnson’s lies about Vietnam, Nixon’s lies about Watergate, Reagan’s lies about Iran-Contra and Bush’s lies about taxes (you charitably omit Bush’s own fabrications about Iran-Contra), Insurance Commissioner Quackenbush’s unfolding tableau of lies and corruption and concludes, astonishingly, that “those incidents pale, of course, to the record of President Clinton.”

I don’t know about the rest of you, but as far as I am concerned Vietnam, Iran-Contra, taxes and corruption in office are one hell of a lot more relative to my life than Clinton’s married-man lies about his furtive and sad sexual indiscretions. Clinton has performed his presidential duties admirably and effectively and to the benefit of all Americans. Maybe it’s time to cut this gifted and hard-working president a break.

The comment by an 80-year-old Navy veteran who called the two popular presidential candidates “first-class liars” speaks a lot about the political system that has evolved. Voters can reject these candidates, who spend millions of our dollars in election campaigns and then protect and support the interests of the rich. If we vote for other candidates like Ralph Nader, the “liars” will get the message.

Unfortunately, even the media have neglected the honest candidates and given all the attention to candidates with a lot of money.
