City officials this week proposed hiring three code enforcement officers next year during their first meeting to discuss the 2000-01 budget.
Otherwise, the city’s proposed $85.7-million budget remained similar to last year’s. The city invited residents on Monday and Tuesday to preview the proposed budget.
Campbell Davidson, a member of the Westside Improvement Assn., applauded the idea of stepping up code enforcement, saying it would improve his neighborhood.
“In essence, they’re saying that they recognize the problem,” he said. “I’m really happy about that.”
Mayor Gary Monahan said he supported hiring the additional officers. City Manager Allan L. Roeder said he could find a way to fund the new officers, even though the preliminary budget document did not account for them.
Another budget briefing is scheduled for 3 p.m. today at City Hall, 77 Fair Drive.
The council is scheduled to vote on the budget Monday.
