Heart Sent in Error for Transplant; Patient Dies

CHICAGO —
Doctors preparing a patient for a kidney transplant last month couldn’t perform the procedure because an organ bank had mistakenly sent them a donated heart instead, the organ bank admitted Wednesday.
The patient, 31-year-old John Sherman, died in a Springfield, Ill., hospital Sunday without ever getting a suitable kidney.
Dave Bosch, a spokesman for the Regional Organ Bank of Illinois, called the mistake unfortunate and said it was the only error the coordinator responsible had made in four years on the job.
