SAN CLEMENTE

Visitors to San Clemente’s North Beach can get a lesson in character along with the usual sun and surf.

A group of 15 San Clemente High School students recently painted a mural on a beach concession stand to highlight six guiding principles of character as part of the Character Counts program.

The students, who are part of the Interact Rotary Club, painted the mural with members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Wal-Mart donated the paint.

The colorful mural is on the south-facing wall of the stand and depicts a surfer on a wave in the foreground, with six surfboards stuck up in the sand.

The six Character Counts principles--trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship--are emblazoned on the surfboards.
