Lewis Upsets Greene in Men’s 100 Meters

Brian Lewis outran world-record holder and fellow American Maurice Greene to win the 100 meters Thursday at the Ericsson Grand Prix.

Lewis won in 10.06 seconds, followed by Greene, who finished in 10.08 after a slow start.

“It is nice to get one over this man,” Lewis said of Greene. “For me it is a confidence boost with the U.S. trials coming up.”

Greene, who is also preparing for the U.S. Olympic trials in July, admitted he is not in top shape after having to skip practice last week because of a stomach ailment.

“Every competition before the Olympic trials and the Olympics is a process, and you’re working on something. And now I need to go home and work on my blocks,” Greene said, referring to the poor start.

Wilson Kipketer of Denmark, the world’s leading 800 runner, outclassed the field by 2.3 seconds, winning in 1:44.27, and Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan won the women’s 3,000 in 8:45.85.
