Vending Machine Ban Sent to Council

City leaders are considering a proposal to banish soda vending machines from outside grocery stores.

The Planning Commission unanimously approved a measure that would outlaw vending machines in front of stores unless the machines are shielded from public view. The City Council will consider the commission’s recommendation in August.

“When a shopping center comes before us with a plan, they don’t have pictures of vending machines in front,” Planning Commissioner Jack Parfitt said. “Six months later they have vending machines in front, and we didn’t approve this.”

Vending machine proprietors argue that forcing them to move their machines inside is inconvenient for customers.

Parfitt said the problem isn’t just one vending machine in front of a store, but the proliferation of them over time. “If you don’t do something they will be a block long,” he said.

Councilwoman Barbra Williamson said she supports the commission’s recommendation.

If vending machines are outlawed, Williamson said she will suggest regulating newspaper racks along city sidewalks. She would like to have newspaper boxes covered as well.
