Five-Point Harness Seats Needed for Bigger Kids

Share

Thank you for your article “Kids’ Auto Safety Gets a Boost From the ‘Big 3’ ” (June 6). As a mother of a 3-year-old, I was intrigued by the discussion of where to place the seat. Current recommendations are to keep a child in a five-point harness in the center of the back seat until he reaches 40 pounds, when he is forced to move to a belt-positioner seat behind the front-seat passengers. There are currently no five-point harness seats on the market that will accommodate a child over 40 pounds. So I now face a dilemma: move my 42-pound child to the side, or leave him in the center and risk pushing the 40-pound limit.

Young children are getting bigger (for their age), why won’t manufacturers design a five-point harness seat that accommodates them?
