LAGUNA BEACH
The 1990s brought mudslides, fires and landslides to Laguna Beach, but this city has also recently seen a boom in tourist dollars and property tax revenue increases from appreciating real estate values.
Balancing the 2000-01 budget has been easier this year than at any time in the last decade because of the increased revenue, City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said.
The City Council is expected to approve the proposed $40-million budget at today’s meeting. About half of the proposed budget, $21 million, is slated for municipal services--30% for police and 25% for the Fire Department--and 23% for streets, beaches and parks, 11% for general government, 3% for community services, 5% for marine safety and 3% for community development.
Proposed general fund spending, more than $26 million, is up $2 million from last year’s budget.
The proposed budget includes a 4% across-the-board raise for city employees.
The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.
